About the Author

Ayo Deforge is a Nigerian writer who resides in the South of France. She was born in Lagos in 1982 and began writing at the age of thirteen, using poetry as a way to express personal grief. She studied French at Lagos State University and currently serves as President of the French-Speaking Nigerians Association.
Ayo has worked as a freelance poet for the Nigerian Daily Independent and NGEX.com. After relocating to the French Riviera in 2012, she worked in the yachting industry while continuing her writing pursuits. She made significant progress on TEARLESS in 2007 after attending Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Creative Writing Workshop in Lagos. She later completed a Faber Academy online writing course in 2022 to further refine her second novel, CAPTIVE (currently unpublished).
TEARLESS was published on December 1st, 2023. A powerful addition to contemporary African literary fiction, it was shortlisted for both the Association of Nigerian Authors Prize for Fiction and the Chinua Achebe Prize for Fiction in 2024.
Her writing has appeared in Litro Magazine, Brittle Paper, JAY Lit, Ayo Magazine, Kalahari Review, Love Grows Stronger in Death anthology, and Lucy Writers Platform, an online forum established by Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge.
Ayo writes both fiction and nonfiction with a focus on grief—especially grief in children—and the emotional interiority of African women navigating identity and belonging.
