I Am a Star begins with a group of children playing together on a sunny afternoon. There are six children from two families. During the course of the play (pretend family), the only boy among them is asked to join in the cooking. This is met with an outburst, ‘boys don’t cook!’
While his siblings support him, the children from the other family (Kari and her sisters) are very surprised. This surprise leads to an extensive discussion between Kari and her mum later in the day. Her mum takes the time to explain to her that girls are just as special as boys.
