These verses are deep, reflective, filled with pain, longing, regret and hope. They touch different concerns: journalism, the girl-child, femininity and womanhood, the pains of growing up, death, loneliness, relationships, the pain and regret of abortion, entertainment, politics, money and being broke, patriarchy, marriage, and politics.
The author is unapologetically and proudly Yorùbá; you can feel it in the verses that spew forth from her pen; verses that discuss the Yorùbá people and their heritage. She wholly extols the ‘old ways’, especially the solid and unshaken brazen confidence of the very enterprising vintage Yorùbá woman. She crafts her words so poignantly.
