Item description from the seller
Newsboys entered the worship realm with 2003's Adoration, an emotionally solid rock-worship collection that became the band's fifth gold-selling release. Devotion, the band's follow-up, neatly picks up where Adoration left off, using unabashed rock musicality to express what's, for the most part, a sincere devotion to God. Critics of modern worship music often decry its lazy lyricism, which relies on trite banalities to express a human experience of God. Devotion doesn't entirely get a pass on that front -- "I long for your presence," "I will praise you," "Every knee must bow," and "Jesus forever be glorified" are some of the more hackneyed phrases in modern worship music and Devotion is full of such clichés. But for every spiritual bromide, there's a genuine glimpse of meaningful emotion. "The Orphan" is a piercingly beautiful plea for reconciliation to one's spiritual family, while "When the Tears Fall" is a nice expression of God's constancy -- despite the "I will praise you" litany. But Devotion's biggest triumph is in its musical approach, which is staunchly rock 'n' roll lifted by lush, symphonic chords -- think U2 meets Michael W. Smith. It adds a vibrant immediacy to lyrics that may or may not be timeless, but nevertheless express an honest emotion.
